Some people didn't pay much attention on how to use the sponges correctly ,which result in many problems to the soldering iron tips. When we are using the sponge for the soldering station, the following two tips should be noted:
1. Humidity: We have to soak the sponge thoroughly with water and then squeeze out the water by hand to keep correct wetness and dryness. It is the right humidity when there is no water dripping down!
2. Wiping: Pull it backward at a 45-degree angle and wipe repeatedly and lightly. Please tin the soldering iron tip as soon as it is shiny and white again .
In short, the sponge van help you to wipe off the residual tin and oxides on the soldering iron tip. If you notice that the sponge is too dry or too wet, deal with it immediately . Don't be lazy!
When using the soldering station, we should soak the yellow heat-resistant sponge in water at first. It will expand rapidly and then can be picked up and wrung dry. After turning on the power of the soldering station, adjust the temperature to 200 degrees first (generally within the range of 200 - 350 degrees). If the temperature is too high and lasts for a long time, it will cause the heating element to burn out. During the heating , we put the heated soldering iron tip into the rosin and then take it out. When the temperature reaches to constant level, use the solder wire to tin the soldering iron tip, and then rub the tip back and forth on the heat-resistant sponge to apply the tin on the surface evenly. Then put the handle back on the soldering iron stand and let it stay for 15 seconds. At this time, the soldering iron will turn black due to oxidation. So we should maintain a good habit: promptly rub it back and forth on the heat-resistant sponge to remove the oxide layer ,which will help to maintain the heat conduction and lifespan of the soldering iron tip.
That's all we can introduce about the use of the sponge for the soldering station. We need to follow above tips carefully to extend the service life of the equipment.
